Why Childfree

This blog is geared for men, women, and couples who have chosen a life without children. It does not mean we don’t like kids, but for a variety of reasons (see my posts under Why Childfree) we don’t have children as part of our life plan.

Society

Society has a lot to say about how people should live their lives, especially those who diverge from society’s playbook: go to college, get married, build a career, buy a house, have kids, yadda, yadda, yadda. Here are some posts about how to handle our families, friends, and strangers who want to give us advice about our desire to have kids.

Benefits

There are many benefits to being childfree. Less stress and more sleep are at the top of my list! People without children also have more time to focus on their health, diet, or career and life goals.

Personal

People who don’t have kids don’t have to sacrifice themselves for their children. We never fear having our identity reduced to as so-in-so’s mom/dad. This gives us the opportunity for self-realization. To figure out who we want to be, to develop our own passions and hobbies. To contemplate the impact we want to have on the world and create a plan to achieve it!

Relationships

The ability to foster relationships is another benefit to being childfree. Whether that is spending more time with your significant other, having more time to hang out with friends and family, volunteering in your community, or basking in the love of your pets, not having children means more time for others.

Career

Having children impacts your career goals. Although this is especially true for women, men also feel the pressure from homelife. I know many women who have taken several years off from employment once they had children. That is not to say they didn’t work! Raising human beings is an extremely hard job- one of the many reasons I don’t want them.

Here I will write about the short and long term effects of having children on your career-especially for women!

Financial

It’s not necessarily true that you’re going to be rich just because you don’t have children. But, if you are struggling financially without having kids, just imagine what your life would be like with the added cost of raising and caring for them! So in a sense, you will be richer than if you had kids because kids are expensive!
Here are some ways childfree adults can improve their financial standing as well as some ideas on what to do if you have some extra cash!

Travel

If you’ve ever been on vacation or traveled to anywhere families are, you will see screaming and crying kids touting they are bored, hungry, their sibling is bothering them, they’re too hot, too cold…….

When you travel without children you can actually have a relaxing vacation- imagine that! You can be spontaneous, flexible, and exotic! You can go to the places or the sites you want to see- even if they aren’t geared towards kids. Especially if they aren’t geared towards kids!

Here are some travel tips and suggestions to help you make that childfree vacation one you won’t cry about!

Retirement

Ah, retirement! The end goal for most employed adults. For many, being childfree means you can accomplish this goal much sooner or have additional money to enjoy a more luxurious retirement because hey, you can afford it!
Employment gives a lot of people purpose, so what do you do once you’ve retired and you still have a lot to contribute? Read on for how being childfree impacts your retired life.

Healthcare and Elder Care

Who’s going to take care of you when you get old? This is a phrase almost every childfree adult has heard time and time again. The reality is having children doesn’t ensure elder care, so if that’s why you had kids you may be disappointed!

Being childfree does require additional planning for our senior years, but we don’t have to do it alone! Read on for ideas and ways you can get the best elder care for you!
